In a significant move to strengthen energy security amid ongoing Russian attacks on its infrastructure, Ukraine has secured imports of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) through Greece for the 2025-2026 winter season. The agreement was signed on November 16, 2025, in Athens during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit, between Greece’s DEPA Commercial and Ukraine’s Naftogaz. Supplies are set to begin in December 2025 (with first deliveries possibly in January) and run through March 2026, using the “Vertical Corridor” pipeline route via Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine. The deal, attended by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle, will help Ukraine replace lost domestic production and offset destruction from Russian strikes, costing nearly €2 billion and backed by European and Ukrainian financing. Greek officials described the arrangement as a key step in replacing Russian gas in the region, aligning with the EU’s planned ban on Russian LNG imports by 2027.
