In yet another brutal attack on a school in northwest Nigeria, armed criminals locally known as “bandits” stormed a girls’ secondary school in Kebbi State on Monday (17 November 2025) at around 4 a.m., killing one teacher and abducting at least 25 female students. The attackers targeted the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town. They first exchanged gunfire with police officers stationed at the school, then cut through barbed-wire fencing to enter the hostel. According to police and eyewitnesses, the gunmen fired indiscriminately to create panic before rounding up the students and forcing them into the surrounding forest. A teacher who tried to protect the girls was shot dead, while another staff member was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital. Security forces, including police tactical units, the military, and local vigilantes, have launched a large-scale search and rescue operation in the forest and along possible escape routes. Northwest and north-central Nigeria have suffered repeated school abductions over the past decade, with criminal gangs using mass kidnappings to demand huge ransoms or to negotiate with the government. Despite a nationwide ban on paying ransoms, the attacks continue unabated. This incident marks the first major school abduction since March 2025, when more than 200 students were taken from a school in Kuriga, Kaduna State.
